University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) has selected San Francisco-based, healthcare specialists Mazzetti and global consulting and engineering firm Arup as the lead MEP engineers of record for its new hospital, UCSF Helen Diller Medical Center at Parnassus Heights (Parnassus Heights).  Collaborating with architect partners HDR (Architect of Record) and Herzog & de Meuron (Lead Designer) to design the “hospital for the future”, Mazzetti and Arup will integrate forward-looking, innovative design, supporting UCSF’s commitment to world-renowned clinical research and training.

The demand for in-house specialty pharmacies in large healthcare facilities is on the rise. Health systems are realizing (more) the benefits these pharmacies offer to their employees and patients. As these pharmacies are expected to facilitate seamless clinical support and education, provide external distribution (which inherently brings challenges), and offer integrated technology, conventional design is facing an evolution. With this evolution, we see opportunity for improving employee workflow and increasing the quality of patient care.

What about using light as a disinfection tool? Several companies in the market are claiming such products--lights with disinfecting capabilities. We've attempted to distill tips and guidelines -- how to assess practices and products and how to apply it with today’s needs in response to COVID-19.

Since the escalation of COVID-19 becoming a true pandemic, information is flooding the web (and inboxes, as we all can attest), including engineering best practices re ventilation and medical gases. Healthcare facility personnel seldom have the luxury of sifting through all the information to distill much-needed answers. We hosted a webinar to help provide some of those answers.

The International Federation of Healthcare Engineering (IFHE), with support from the Association of Medical Facility Professionals (AMFP) and Mazzetti, has launched its first ever Global Healthcare Energy Awards. The awards aim to encourage healthcare facilities around the world to commit to a reduction in energy use that will ultimately lessen the entire global health system’s intensive carbon footprint, all through a simple energy tracking process.

With the significant uptick in ventilator use, typical medical oxygen and compressed air systems are being taxed in ways our healthcare facilities have never experienced. And, worst case, if these systems are not properly managed (and modified in some cases) this critical, “invisible” treatment could be jeopardized.
