Avago Technologies’ 192,372-square-foot west annex expansion project has achieved a major milestone. Over 200 field workers and representatives from the design-build project team of JE Dunn Construction, Mazzetti, BURKETTDESIGN, and Martin/Martin along with Avago personnel, celebrated the topping out of the core and shell structure late last month. Topping out signifies the placement of the last piece of structural steel and recognizes the project’s significant safety achievement of 185 days without a lost time accident.
“This project has represented design-build at its best,” shares Kevin Brettmann, vice president for JE Dunn Construction. “The project’s fast paced schedule demanded a highly collaborative approach and we’re fortunate to have a team that integrates so seamlessly.”
Unique to this facility, that will ultimately house clean room and MEP support space, is its cheese slab elevated deck. Comprised of 16 inch holes situated every 24 inches on square, the design of this structure facilitates the “clean” environment required for Avago’s manufacturing process. This clean environment is maintained by the massive amount of airflow which is filtered through HEPA filters on a continuous cycle.
“A major goal of this project was to integrate detailing and fabrication into the design process to facilitate prefabrication and drive innovation and speed into the design with our MEP trade partners. Pull planning and a PPC log was used to plan and help the team communicate with facility engineering leads to ensure needs of the project were delivered on time and on budget. It is an honor to work with a great group of design, owner and contractor partners to deliver this exciting project,” said Phil Gioia, principal for Mazzetti.
“This team has accomplished next to the impossible. It takes an incredibly talented team and a well-integrated approach to produce a project of this quality and complexity in this timeframe. It has been an absolute pleasure to work with Avago and everyone on the design-build team,” said Michele Ponicsan principal at BURKETTDESIGN.
