Part of the University of Texas System, the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston (UTMB) is located on an 84-acre campus containing more than 70 buildings. In 2008, Hurricane Ike, a Category 2 hurricane, struck Galveston Island, damaging many buildings on UTMB’s campus, including the John Sealy Hospital. After the storm devastated the campus, UTMB leadership and State Legislators fast-tracked the construction of the Jennie Sealy Replacement Hospital and the expansion of the Clinical Services Wing (CSW).

The 13-story Jennie Sealy Replacement Hospital includes pediatric acute care, 20 cutting edge surgical suites, surgical intensive care units, 28-bed day surgery unit, 260 patient rooms, and clinical support services. Hospital activity begins on the 2nd floor, 25-feet above sea level.

The new seven-story CSW connects Jennie Sealy Hospital to most of the buildings on campus, with access points on the 2nd and 4th floors. It contains a pharmacy, laboratory space and central sterile processing. Mazzetti+GBA provided Medical Equipment planning, Medical Equipment, IT Device Placement, and Construction Administration for both projects.

ADDRESSING ADDED CHALLENGES

With construction of both facilities on parallel schedules – by two different contractors – our team provided a high-level of coordination of technology delivery schedules, vendor installations, and equipment movement paths, including:

  • Leading integration capabilities for the MRI as part of the Steris Integration System.
  • Administered medical equipment interoperability assessments to ensure equipment coordinated with the hospital’s medical device integration plan.
  • Managed equipment delivery and testing for departments with multiple moves, ensuring equipment arrived on time, intact, and fully operable.
  • Managed the installation between medical equipment and OR integration vendors with the contractor for 20 operating suites.
