Natural Ventilation in Healthcare Facilities: Should We Just Open the Window?

Dick Moeller, PE, ASHE Fellow, ASHRAE, LEED AP, Principal, Mazzetti
Russ Olmstead, MOH, CIC, Director, Infection Prevention & Control, Unified Clinical Organization
Travis English, MBA, PE, LEED AP, CEM, Chief Design Engineer, Engineering Team Manager, Kaiser Permanente

The desire to use natural ventilation in healthcare has increased in the last several years. With the greater focus on hospital energy consumption, patient health and well-being, and quality of the interior environment (which leads to fewer patient complaints),  having immediate access to outdoor air and light is an obvious design strategy to be analyzed and implemented when the conditions are right. This presentation discusses the technical challenges of the decision process, the design and operation of the facility, as well as inherent benefits to the hospital and patient through natural ventilation strategies.

  • Understand how natural ventilation impacts infection control, and the pros and cons.
  • Examine how natural ventilation attributes correlate to patient satisfaction and HCAHPS scores.
  • Learn about the architectural and engineering challenges in implementing natural ventilation and their cost implications.
  • Look at hospital resilience and disaster readiness and how natural ventilation impacts those plans.

Disaster Preparation: Not Always a Prescription

Spivey Lipsey, PE, LEED AP, Principal, Mazzetti
Cindy Nuesslein, RN, MBA, FACHE, Principal, Mazzetti
Dick Moeller, PE, ASHE Fellow, ASHRAE, LEED AP, Principal, Mazzetti

Design professionals from the Gulf Coast and West Coast will engage in a comparative discussion of the commonalities and differences in planning and designing systems to withstand the catastrophic effects of weather-related events versus seismic and other instantaneous events. The session will  explore the comparison of different locales such as hot/humid versus dry/desert, urban versus rural, and international (e.g., Haiti and the Philippines). Presenters will discuss response components such as first responder, safe harbor,  place of shelter, and evacuation and will explore facility types, including critical access, tertiary, ambulatory, and any long-term care or mental health. The panel will also discuss the balance between cost and the diminishing returns of multiple layers of failure prevention.

  • Obtain a new perspective on the nuances of disaster planning.
  • See disaster preparation from a global perspective.
  • Gain insight into points of failure previously overlooked.
  • Learn from the shared experiences of facilities in locales and circumstances very different from your own.
