3/16/16

It’s that time of year again. Spring training, March Madness and PDC Summit. As you pack your bags for sunny San Diego, be sure to include those old eyeglasses collecting dust in your junk drawer. Help us donate foursight!

Mazzetti is collecting used eyeglasses to contribute to the Lions Club International’s “Recycle for Sight” program—changing lives with the gift of sight.

How can you help? Stop by the Mazzetti Booth to donate your used (adult & children) sunglasses, eyeglasses, even safety glasses OR contribute $5 and Mazzetti will donate a pair of glasses on your behalf. All proceeds to benefit Lions Club International.

And a few reccomendations while you’re at PDC. We’ll see you there!

Regulation of Airborne Contaminants and Climate Change: What You Need to Know

Mazzetti Walt Vernon, PE, MBA, JD, LEED AP, CEO, Mazzetti & Mark Mininberg, JD, President, Hospital Energy

Health care organizations must be aware of and comply with laws regulating airborne contaminants in the United States. This session will explain the overlapping structure of law at global, federal, state, and local levels, especially as related to environmental airborne emissions. ASHE members must prepare for the coming regulations, both in how to mitigate the worst of the effects, and how to best seize the opportunities they create. This session will arm attendees to take a leadership role on this important issue.

Learning objectives:

  • Recognize global climate change law developments and their implications for U.S. health facilities.
  • Understand federal and state climate change law developments and their implications for U.S. health facilities.
  • Discover ways health facilities are likely to be affected by U.S. climate change law developments.
  • Recognize ways health facilities can take advantage of U.S. climate change law developments.

FGI Evidence-Based Research Results

Mazzetti CEO Walt Vernon PE, MBA, JD, LEED AP, CEO, Mazzetti

The FGI has engaged in an extensive effort to establish its foundations in science, and has created a model for other organizations to follow in transparency, analytical rigor, and reliance only on real data for policy making. This session will examine the methodologies for understanding what evidence (not science) means, and how to use it. It will focus on the ways these notions drive the FGI research initiatives, and examine the research results and the ways the research might be used in developing the next iteration of the Guidelines.

Learning objectives:

  • State how the FGI uses evidence in evaluating its existing text.
  • Describe how the FGI intends to use evidence in evaluating new proposals
  • Describe the results of the FGI research into the evidentiary foundations of the current text.
  • Articulate how the FGI could evolve in light of these new findings.

The Impact that Technology Should Have on the FGI Guidelines: Making your Voice Heard

Mazzetti Walt Vernon, PE, LEED AP, EDAC, FASHE, Board Member, Facility Guidelines Institute; Virginia Pankey, AIA, EDAC, LEED AP, Senior Medical Planner Christner, Inc.; Gloria A. Cascarino, Senior Associate, Director of Medical Equipment Planning, Francis Cauffman Architects

Today we are challenged to create health care facilities that can reduce costs for effective care delivery. Technology has played a critical role in this process by eliminating the need for certain functions and facilitating acuity-adaptable rooms and shared departments across health care systems. Revisions for the 2018 FGI Guidelines are under development this year, and one of the major issues being discussed is technology. What is the impact of technology on the health care built environment, and how should the revised Guidelines address these changes? This session is not a presentation-it is a workshop for attendees to provide their input on making revisions to the Guidelines. Walter Vernon will provide a brief update on the status of the proposals currently under consideration. Then working groups facilitated by a Health Guidelines Revision Committee member will explore the influence of technology in current and future health care planning, design and construction; and how the Guidelines should be revised to capture this transformation. The number of attendees will be limited to 60.

Learning objectives:

  • Distinguish between different kinds of evidence.
  • Participate in facilitated discussions on the future of health care technology.
  • Provide a series of recommendations for consideration by the Health Guidelines Revision Committee.
  • Explain how FGI committees will use this information to formulate proposed language for the 2018 edition.
