Transition in the East: A Good Leader Facilitates NEW Good Leaders

Seven years ago, when Mazzetti merged with Nash Lipsey Burch (NLB), the youngest of the NLB Principals was David Lennon. David had come from outside the industry, and his leadership abilities quickly became apparent. While the other Nashville Principals focused on leading the traditional design engineering practice, David helped us to build a new commissioning practice.

Through the years, David’s leadership has continued to grow. He helped us to create a retro-commissioning service; helped us create a subsidiary construction company; helped us to create a Facilities consulting practice. He took over the leadership of the Nashville office in the dark days of the recession and created a sense of excitement that consistently attracted the best talent and the clients who trusted us to take care of them.

Probably the greatest accomplishment of a leader is to build the people on his or her team, so that they are prepared to become leaders in their own right, when the time is right. David has accomplished this last important feat probably best of all.

During David’s tenure at Mazzetti he was also leading the development of another company, AGR (Anesthetic Gas Recovery), in which Mazzetti is invested. This company was created by a brilliant anesthesiologist from Vanderbilt University, who has helped to nurse it along, developing the Dynamic Gas Scavenging System valve technology . The company is dedicated to improving the financial and the environmental bottom lines of healthcare by capturing waste anesthetic and allowing it to be reused, rather that expelled into the atmosphere. But, the organization has needed serious leadership, engineering, and sales support. David has consistently worked to help AGR and has decided that his best utilization is to shift into a larger role in that endeavor.

And so, David’s greatest leadership accomplishment, the development of his leadership team, will now bear fruit, as he will transition from a direct Mazzetti leadership role and into an AGR role. The official transition will finalize at the end of the year; after which, David will continue to work with Mazzetti and our clients on a consultant-basis.

Over the years, I have come to trust and to love David. He is a gentle man, a remarkably talented man, and a builder. I will miss him. But, despite my sadness, I, and all of Mazzetti celebrate his new challenges and support him. We are also excited to welcome a new generation of leaders in the eastern offices of Mazzetti–men and women of great talent and great character. People who, like David, will help us to continue to attract great talent, and focus that talent to the benefit of our partners and clients.

When I was younger, I used to get a thrill from accomplishing things. More and more, as my role evolves, I get a thrill from helping the people around me to accomplish things. Godspeed, David, and godspeed to the new Mazzetti East Regional Leaders:
